Meta Announces Removal of News from Facebook and Instagram in Canada Following Bill C-18 Legislation
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, revealed its plans to remove news content from the social media platforms in Canada within the next few weeks. The decision comes as a response to the recently passed federal legislation, Bill C-18, also known as the Online News Act.
In a statement released online, Meta confirmed that the implementation of these changes has already begun and will gradually be rolled out to all users accessing Facebook and Instagram in Canada over the coming weeks.
As part of the update, news publishers and broadcasters will no longer have their content and news links visible on the platforms. Furthermore, users will be restricted from posting or sharing any news content or audio-visual material produced by news outlets.
Meta clarified that the identification of news outlets will be based on the definitions and guidance outlined in the legislation. To address concerns regarding reliable news sources, the company has collaborated with partners to create a guide that will assist users in finding credible online news resources.
The impact of these changes on local news providers, such as TBnewswatch, NWOnewswatch, and SNnewswatch, was previously discussed in an editor's note published last week. To stay informed about local news, users are encouraged to directly visit the websites of these news outlets.
With Meta's decision to remove news content from its platforms in response to the Online News Act, users in Canada will need to rely on other sources to access their daily news updates.
