Space Junk Found on Western Australia Beach: Authorities Provide Insight

Authorities in Western Australia have determined that a mysterious object discovered on a beach in Green Head, located 250 kilometers north of Perth, is most likely space junk. The copper-colored cylinder has attracted local residents eager to catch a glimpse of the unidentified object, fueling speculation about its origin. Online forums have been abuzz with various theories regarding its source.

On Tuesday, the Western Australia Police Force issued a statement confirming that the item is believed to be "space debris," a conclusion supported by the country's space agency. Initially, police cordoned off the area and cautioned residents to stay away. However, in a recent update, they declared the object safe after an analysis conducted by the Department of Fire and Emergency Service and Chemistry Centre of Western Australia found no current risk to the community.

Efforts are now underway to determine the best approach for the object's safe removal and storage. While the Australian Space Agency expressed the possibility that it could be from a foreign space launch vehicle, they are consulting with international counterparts for more information. The cylinder, standing taller than a human and displaying signs of damage and barnacle growth, likely spent a significant amount of time at sea before washing ashore.

Space archaeologist Alice Gorman from Flinders University in Adelaide suggests that the cylinder could be the third phase of a polar satellite launch vehicle previously launched by India. Its dimensions and materials closely resemble those used in Indian launch vehicles since 2010. Gorman also explained that the intact color and shape of the object indicate that it detached before reaching outer space, avoiding intense atmospheric re-entry burn. It may have landed in the ocean five to ten years ago, with a recent deep-sea storm pushing it toward the shore.

While the cylinder runs on solid fuel that only releases toxic substances under high temperatures, Gorman advised local residents to exercise caution and avoid handling the space junk unless necessary. Authorities are continuing their investigation and ensuring the safety of the community until the object is removed.
