Nokia Announces Accelerated 6G Development Timeline for Commercialization by 2029

Nokia is fast-tracking its 6G network development, aiming to roll out 6G network equipment by 2027 and commercialize it by 2029, as revealed by Brian Cho, head of RAN product management at Nokia Korea, during a recent press event in Seoul. This timeline would put Nokia a year ahead of the Korean government's digital roadmap, known as "K-Network."

The telecommunications giant has set its sights on securing a leadership position in the wireless market, with ongoing efforts to advance both 5G and 6G technologies simultaneously, as stated by Brian Cho.

The forthcoming 6G networks will be categorized into three segments: extreme performance-specialized networks, network of networks, and network-as-a-service, as outlined by Nokia's Chief Technology Officer, James Han.

Meanwhile, China is also actively defining the potential applications of 6G and is expected to establish 6G standards in 2028, with practical 6G use anticipated to begin by 2030, according to Xiang Ligang, Director-general of the Information Consumption Alliance in China.

Earlier this year, Nokia, in collaboration with NTT DOCOMO and NTT, successfully integrated artificial intelligence and machine learning into the 6G radio air interface, allowing radios to possess learning capabilities. Moreover, they made use of spectrum above 100 GHz for the first time, significantly boosting network capacity.

Nokia's accelerated 6G development roadmap indicates its commitment to staying ahead in the wireless market, striving to meet the increasing demand for advanced telecommunications technologies.
